Kat's Antique Gabrieleen Permanent Wave Machine Real Perm VOD Digital Video on Demand
It's a lovely summer Saturday when Katherine steps into Franke's Beauty and Barbershop for a permanent wave. The beauty operator, Louise, has been waiting for her; Katherine is the new hire and will be starting to work there Monday and, thus, needs the new hair style, the popular waved bob. You'll be transported back to the early 1940's as Katherine is caped and has her hair sectioned for the felt pads, rubber spacers, end papers, metal perm rods, flannel pads, and then having the Croquignole heaters clamped on. Those heaters are attached to a working Gabrieleen Silver Queen permanent wave machine. Real vintage 1940's perm solution was used, as it contains "lanolin and other fine oils". Rotten egg smell filled the room, and soon the sound of frying eggs could be heard as the heat boiled the water out of the flannel. Due to previous bleaching and to Kat's fine hair, the 212-degree heated clamps were taken off after two minutes. Louise then cooled the hair with a 1940's Hamilton Beach hand-held hand dryer set on cool. Since that process was taking more time than planned, Louise covered Katherine's head in a cotton triangle hairnet and gave her cushions to protect her ears. Katherine sat under the dryer to finish the cooling and drying of her hair. Afterwards, Katherine's hair was cut into a bob and she was treated to a beautiful makeup application, a glamour look reminiscent of the 1930s.
