Variocurler perm rods are very rare today. They were made by Olivia Garden, made in Belgum, back in the 1980s, and were sold to beauty salons. These curlers with their special sticks formed the most unique and creative hair styles. Unfortunately, when salons buy the latest equipment and products, the old stuff either gets thrown out or is packaged away and put into storage. Luckily for us, Carmen in Columbia Heights, Minnesota still has a box of these amazing Variocurlers.
After a bleaching to rid Kat's hair of the pink and green hair colors, Kat's hair is set with the pink, white, and green Variocurlers. You'll see how these curlers just snap into place - no rubber band or clamp needed! A hair net and ear covers are put on and Kat takes a seat under the dryer for about 35 minutes. The Variocurlers are removed revealing beautiful curls. Because Kat's hair is still a bit damp, she is again netted, her ears covered, and put back under the dryer for another 9 minutes. Once her hair is dry, it is brushed out into a retro bouffant - fluffy curls all around, but flat on top. With Kat wearing a conservative blouse, black pencil skirt, and buttoned up boots, her look is reminiscent of a 1950's office girl.
